Branding: The Big Questions

Okay, so we are going to start from the very beginning (as it’s a very good place to start). We know what it is like to be a freelance muso, hustling for your next gig, audition after audition, and trying to make a name for yourself in the industry.

Why not back this up with a little online support? We mean, online presence. The music world is growing rapidly, more and more artists are graduating from conservatoire and vying for the same jobs as you, so how to do you separate yourself from the crowd?

It only takes a little thought. Who are you? Where have you come from? What has your journey been to bring you to this audition, this gig, this contract? What are you like to work with?

When you start to answer these questions, be truthful and honest. The industry wants to see you, know you, and hire you. They don’t want you to be someone that you think they want you to be.

So how do we incorporate this into a website?

Well, let’s answer those questions shall we?

Who are you?

Where have you come from?

What has your journey been to bring you to this audition, this gig, this contract?

What are you like to work with?

Let us add another few:

What are your favourite colours?

What are three words that describe you?

How did you go? Have you answered these as truthfully as you can?

Let’s look at your answers now.

Who are you? Have you only talked about who are you as an artist? What else can you say to describe you, away from the arts.

Where have you come from? Did you say the little town in Sussex, your home town Melbourne, Australia, London born-and-bred?

What has your journey been to bring you to this audition, this gig, this contract? Tell us your story. What was your first part time job? How did you pay for university? Did you study arts? What was your first gig? Who did you meet? Have they shaped the artist you are today? What about your family, friends?

What are you like to work with? Let’s be as real as you can be. This has two parts: who do you want to be in the rehearsal room or orchestra pit? Now, who do you really think you are? Be real with yourself, there can also be growth to be made.

Last two! These will definitely help with choosing template style.

What are your favourite colours? Pretty straight forward. What are you favourites? Then look at the colours that feature most in your headshots? A red top, blue trousers etc.

What are three words that describe you? Are you bold, energetic, smiley, fun, serious, sophisticated, friendly, wholesome, poised etc. Find three words that describe you. Try not to make a list a mile long, that will make choosing a style difficult.
